King Frosch Rieslings

Discover the Riesling Grape

History of the Varietal

Popular wine varietals come and go, but one which is always at the top of the charts for white wine is the Riesling. The Riesling grape varietal has been around for several hundred years. It was first planted in the 15th century and now there are over 50,000 hectares planted of Riesling around the world. In fact, it is found on every continent where grapes are grown. Learn more about the Riesling grape varietal and why it is so popular.

A Most Hardy Varietal

Why is the Riesling so popular is all growing regions? As you know, the Riesling is most closely associated with Germany. The Riesling grape hails from Germany and is a major varietal within the country. Secondly, the vines have a high tolerance for the cold weather and are drought resistant. In addition, the berries of this varietal are very light and the grapes have proven a strong resistance to botrytis. This is a fungus or mold which grows on the vine. A Riesling’s hardiness means it can grow in many regions, in many countries.

From Dry to Sweet

Riesling can range from sweet to dry, and all versions are delicious. Many people immediately connect it with sweeter versions popular in the U.S., but in Germany it is crafted at all levels. When crafted as a dry style it contains very little or no sugar, and there are even diabetic versions available. The sweetness level is a personal preference but the Riesling tastes great, clean and refreshing no matter what the level of residual sugar.

Typical Riesling Flavors

The Riesling grape is described as juicy, floral, earthy, tangy, tart, fruity and you will often smell lemons, limes, oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, apples and the list goes on for this versatile varietal. The amount of alcohol in the drink is dependent on ripeness and sweetness levels. However, even though the Riesling often times has a strong floral aroma and fruit flavors, the high acidity levels leave behind a nice crisp taste.

Balanced Acidity and Fruit Flavor

Since the Riesling has high acidity levels, it not only makes it enjoyable to drink, it can be aged for hundreds of years. This makes it one of the few white wines that is very good quality after being aged. Most white wines are meant to be drunk soon after they are bottled.

How to Enjoy a Riesling

When serving a Riesling, first give it some time to breathe. Riesling is usually best served at a temperature of 44-50 degrees Fahrenheit. This allows for the characteristics and aromas of the wine to flourish in your mouth.

Riesling and Food Pairings

Rieslings pair well with almost every type of food. This includes spicy ethnic dishes and even sushi. There are no oaky tones or harsh flavors in Riesling. Chefs love to create meals paired with a Riesling because it is so versatile and complements many foods. In addition to being a star at the dinner table, a sweeter version can also serve as a final dessert. In short, the Riesling is perfect for any social situation. So there truly is a Riesling for everyone. The more you learn about the Riesling grape varietal, the more you will discover it is simply a matter of finding the one with the right sweetness level to fit your palate.

All Natural King Frosch Wines

King Frosch All Natural Clean-crafted wines from Germany
King Frosch founder Klaus Bellinghausen is featured in an article in the California Business Journal.

It starts when Klaus Bellinghausen recognizes a void for all natural, clean-crafted wines after movinig to California. He brings his favorite all natural, clean-crafted, German wines directly to wine lovers. In 2003, he opens King Frosch All Natural Wines. Learn more about all natural clean-crafted no-headache wines.

“All our wines follow a recipe of perfect balance between naturally occurring sweetness in the wine and acidity,” says Bellinghausen.

Today they are known as no-headache wines by thousands of faithful King Frosch fans.

Hand Selected and Crafted at Family Owned Vineyards

First of all, Klaus works with family-owned vineyards in the world’s premier wine-growing areas. Secondly, he develops standards for all natural, clean-crafted King Frosch Wines.

Finally, wineries which craft wines for King Frosch must meet Klaus’ stringent guidelines.  In order to oversee the selection process, he travels to Germany twice annually.

Usually, rich top soil at vineyards where King Frosch Wines are born is scarce. However, this forces the vines’ root systems to seek deep down to the nutrients in the soil, drawing from rich mineral reserves below the surface.

This is in stark contrast to wines made from grapes grown in shallow fields that have been over-irrigated, fertilized with synthetic chemicals and waterlogged.

Lowest Sulfites, Lowest Histamine Levels

In addition, all King Frosch German wines are crafted under Germany’s strict wine making laws. This means there are no artificial colors or additives (apart from the required sulfites, which are much lower than used in other countries). All the wineries use sustainable, environmentally friendly farming methods, including dry farming.

Known as the No-Headache Wines

In fact, King Frosch Wines customers call them the “no-headache” wines. We have over 3,000 customers who purchase direct from us online and we are respected for our quality and consistency.

Today King Frosch offers over 50 varietals. If you are looking for all natural wines, clean-crafted wines, you need to learn about King Frosch Wines.

3 Reasons to Switch to All Natural Wines

Tired of wine headaches? Switch to all natural wines and you may put an end to them. Are you familiar with this story?

It’s Friday night, and you open a bottle of your favorite red wine. What a fantastic way to start the weekend! But after your second glass, you feel nauseous and your face is flushed. It’s that dreaded red wine headache again and the night ends early. But you are not alone—a reported 75% of wine drinkers know the feeling.

For many, red wine headaches are regular occurrences. The alcohol content in the wine is usually not the culprit. You may have searched for preventative solutions, such as drinking a lot of water or taking anti-histamines, but nothing helps. There is hope! But before you cork your bottles and put them back on the rack, here are three reasons why natural wines may be your ticket to a better weekend.

  1. Natural wines contain less of the “stuff” that causes headaches

The cause of your wine headache is most likely histamine intolerance, or when your body has an allergic reaction to this pesky compound. However, not all wines contain high levels of histamines. The most effective way to avoid wine headaches is choosing to drink wines with low histamine levels. King Frosch’s wines have the lowest histamine levels in the world—they come from a country that recommends histamine levels remain at less that 2mg/liter . Other wines can have levels as high as 8mg/liter. The way King Frosch wines are crafted, many in stainless steel tanks, also help maintain lower levels of histamines. In fact, many of our customers refer to the King Frosch as “The No Headache Wine” for that very reason.

2. Natural wines taste fresher than wines with artificial ingredients.

Cheap wines are infamous for being warm on the throat, and feeling as though they’re fighting their way down to your stomach. Why? If you’re paying less than $10 per bottle, you are pretty much guaranteed that your wine was made using artificial taste and/or color enhancers in order to simulate the taste of best-selling, more expensive wines. But even expensive wines can be mass produced with low-quality grapes that need a little artificial help. It’s also not unusual for wine companies to add sugar to increase the alcohol content, which is another trick used to hide flaws. This can be done legally or illegally, according to the wine laws of the country in which the wine is produced. Natural wine companies, on the other hand, respect the wine-making process and work with the grapes from a specific region, from a specific varietal. Rather than adding sugar and artificial colors, King Frosch emphasizes the importance of naturally perfecting our wines during every step of the wine-making process. King Frosch Wines are crafted according to strict German wine laws, which prevent and forbid certain additives for certain quality levels. The result is a wonderful finished product–a perfect balance between fruit and acidity–unlike companies that rush their wine making process and rely heavily on adding artificial ingredients.

3. Natural Wines have nothing to hide.

In the United States and other countries, wine companies don’t have to disclose certain ingredients on their labels, such as the type of food coloring used, how much unnatural sugar was added to the wine, or whether chips of toasted oak are used to flavor the wine. However, when you drink an all natural wine, you don’t have to worry about consuming Mega Purple concentrate or Red No.3, and you certainly don’t have have to consider the authenticity of the flavors that you are tasting. So are you ready to try a delicious, all-natural wine? King Frosch is always looking out for your best wine-related interests. You will find our all natural wines here.

Award Winning Wines

Award Winning Wines from King Frosch

This Award Winning King Frosch Wine received two awards, Best of Show and Platinum at the Winemakers Challenge.
King Frosch Riesling Auslese received two awards, Best of Show and Platinum at the Winemakers Challenge.

King Frosch just received word that three of our wines were 2016 award winners at the 8th annual Winemaker Challenge International Wine Competition.

This year’s evaluations were conducted over the final weekend in January by a team of 19 prominent winemakers. And the King Frosch Award Winning Wines are:

BEST of SHOW Dessert Wine: King Frosch 2015 Noble Sweet Riesling Auslese, which is also known as #8B on our website. It was also awarded a special Platinum Award. This means it received a point score on the 100 scale. The score it received was 95 points!

SILVER AWARD WINNER: King Frosch’s 2014 Dry Dornfelder received the Silver Award. This isn’t surprising! One of our best-selling red wines, this is the second Silver Medal it has received. This delicious, earthy dry red wine offers a full mouth experience with a clean finish. Light tannins, peppery finish. It’s also a rare dry red in the U.S., as the Dornfelder varietal is grown in limited quantities and not many are exported. This German estate wine is a winner. And remember, all King Frosch All Natural wines have no artificial coloring, or taste enhancers and they have the lowest levels of sulfites possible, which makes for clean, enjoyable drinking.

Thank you to all the judges at the Winemaker Challenge International Wine Competition.
